When an angry Leapy Lee emptied his beer glass on the manager’s head the insults and swearing escalated into violence. A fight broke out, several pubgoers happy to join in. Alan was knocked to the floor by someone. Leapy Lee punched that person in the face, breaking his nose. Then the fight really got going. Glasses were broken, chairs smashed, windows shattered. Leapy Lee was hit on the head with a heavy object by the furious manager. He jumped the manager, cutting his arm with a knife, causing a wound which required eighteen stitches. The police were called. The following day Alan and Leapy Lee were taken in for questioning, then released. A month later they were charged with ‘grievous bodily harm and causing malicious damage’. Leapy Lee was charged with stabbing, and Alan with being an accessory. They were fined, and a court date was set for September. The problem for Alan was that witnesses had told the police it was Alan who had handed Leapy Lee the knife, with the instruction, ‘Here use this’.
